The Kidnapped Bride by Heather Hiestand

Cover_The Kidnapped Bride

Pursuing this elusive heiress will be the ultimate temptation…

Lady Elizabeth Shield is used to saving herself from trouble. And even if dashing private inquiry agent Dougal Alexander just rescued her from white slavers, she’s definitely not returning to her stifling aristocratic life and unsuitable suitors. Not when there are other women in danger—and a secret promise to keep in Edinburgh. But outwitting Dougal’s tactics to return her to London and her family will be easier than staying away from his intoxicating kisses…

He’s a baron’s second son accustomed to making his own way and uncovering the truth. Now Dougal must keep Lady Elizabeth close for her own protection, but her spirited wiles are proving scandalously irresistible. His most difficult case yet will be showing her that he’s everything she truly desires—and that love is the greatest of adventures…

Recent Review “Before I realized it, the unusually strong and well-developed characters of The Kidnapped Bride had sneaked up on me and captured my full attention. This is one of the best shorter books I have ever read.” –Delle Jacobs, author of Lady Wicked

“Ye are going to do as you are told,” Dougal said. “You have lived one misadventure after another since running away, and that is at an end. I’m taking you back tae your brothers so they can decide what to do with you.”

“My life is none of your business.”

He took her upper arm. “I’ve been paid very well to make it my business, Lady Elizabeth. And home is where you’re going.”

She attempted to wrench her arm away, but his grip was too strong. “Let go of me, you beast.”

He gripped her tighter in response. “My lady hoyden, you will obey. There is no other alternative.”

She swayed in closer to him, unable to resist his grip, then fixed her gaze on him. Something in his eyes softened. Just as he must have thought she’d given into him, she stomped on his foot, hard.

“Ow,” she cried, as the pain from stomping on hard leather reverberated up her unprotected foot.

He glanced down. “It’s no use attempting tae hurt a man wearing shoes when you haven’t any yourself.”

She was still too much of a lady to swear, but she opened her mouth to give him the tongue-lashing he deserved.

Instead of letting her speak, he grinned at her, then kissed her full on the mouth.

Red Pump Romance Reviews

NEW Red Pump Final2I’m torn on my opinion of Not Quite a Wife by Mary Jo Putney. I love the fact that Laurel is involved with a women’s shelter as well as a clinic. Through her work, the story brought attention to several women’s issues and showed that deep down Laurel is a giving and caring person. I also fell in love with James for his patience and understanding when his wife leaves him for killing a man, even though his actions were in self-defense.

But for all of her good traits, Lauren was also pious. Her religious beliefs gave her the right to judge her husband’s actions and I felt she gave up on the marriage before it had a chance to get through the rough patch. It was easier to live separate lives than to honor her vows. Of course, young imperfect characters make perfect redemptions!  And why did James wait ten long years? As an employee of the war office, I would have expected him to take charge and not leave their marriage in the hands of ‘chance’. I will, though, give him points for taking the lead in putting their marriage back together when the opportunity arose, as Laurel seemed to be looking for any excuse possible to give up again.

This book is #6 in the Lost Lord’s series. Although it can definitely be read as a stand-alone book, those who have read the previous releases will enjoy the multiple updates regarding previous characters. (For me, that’s a wonderful perk of a series)

Overall, I love reunion stories. This was an easy read and although I didn’t agree with all of the hero and heroine’s actions, Miss Putney’s stories always hold rich and wonderful characters, unexpected story turns, and a Happily Ever After!  I’m looking forward to going back and reading books #1-#5. Hopefully I can get those in before #7 comes out.

Not Quite A Wife

Marry in haste, repent at leisure.

James, Lord Kirkland, owns a shipping fleet, half a London gaming house, and is a ruthlessly effective spymaster. He is seldom self-indulgent…except when it comes to the gentle, indomitable beauty who was once his wife.

Laurel Herbert gave James her heart as an innocent young girl—until she saw him perform an act of shocking violence before her very eyes. That night she left her husband, and he let her go without a word of protest.

Now, ten years later, a chance encounter turns passionate, with consequences that cannot be ignored. But as they try to rebuild what was broken, they must face common enemies and a very uncommon love….
